Alternation of generations, also called metagenesis or heterogenesis, in biology, thealternation of a sexual phase and an asexual phase in the life cycle of an organism. The two phases, or generations, are often morphologically, and sometimes chromosomally, distinct.
It is the Phenomenon shown by the plants where the gametophytic generation alternates with the sporophytic generation. The gametophytic generation is the haploid phase which is represented by the anther and ovary in higher plants. The sporophytic phase is the diploid phase. In higher plants the flowering plants represents its sporophytic generation
