Reported speech is a sentence used to 'report' what someone is saying.
If a reported clause is a statement sentence, it is usually used that conjunction (can be omitted) to introduce it.
I say ⤏ reporting clause
I am a student ⤏ reported clause
If the reporting clause uses past tense, then the tense in the reported clause also changes. This change is called backshift. This happens because the time of the sentence is spoken directly and the time reported is different.
The tense changes that occur are:
1. present simple ➺ past simple
2. present progressive ➺ past progressive
3. present perfect ➺ past perfect
4. present perfect progressive ➺ past perfect progressive
5. past simple ➺ past perfect
6. past progressive ➺ past perfect progressive
7. past perfect ➺ past perfect
Example:
I said,
1. "I drink tea" ➺ I drank tea
2. "I am drinking tea" ➺ I was drinking tea
3. "I have drunk the tea" ➺ I had drunk the tea
4. "I have been drinking tea" ➺ I had been drinking tea
5. "I drank tea" ➺ I had drunk tea
6. "I was drinking tea" ➺ I had been drinking tea
7. "I had drunk the tea" ➺ I had drunk the tea
If reported clause uses verb capital, only a few capital experiences a backshift.
1. will ➺ would
2. shall ➺ would, should (only for question sentences)
3. can ➺ could
4. may (maybe) ➺ might
5. may (may) ➺ could
6. must (must) ➺ had to
7. must (speculation) ➺ must remain
8. could, should, would, might, need ➺ not change
Example:
I said,
1. "I will go" ➺ I would go
2. "I shall go" ➺ I would go
3. "Shall I go?" I should go
4. "I may be busy" ➺ I might be busy
5. "you may go" ➺ you could go
6. "I must pay the bill" had I had to pay the bill
7. "they must be tourist" ➺ they must be tourist
