A square garden has an area of 6400 m². If two paths are running midway and parallel to the sides of the garden and each path is 2 m wide, find the area of the paths.

To find the area of the paths we firstly have to find the side of the square garden, which is equal to √Area. Then, as we got the side of the square garden then we can find the area of the paths, as side of the garden = length of the paths. As, we have got both length and breadth we can find the area of the path by using the formula:

B = Breadth
Then, we will subtract the area of intersection of the paths as it should not be counted twice. After this we will get the actual area of the paths.
Solution:
Side of the square garden = √Area
= √6400 m² = 80 m
Hence, side of the square garden is 80 m.
As, side of the garden = length of the paths
Therefore,
Area of the paths = (L × B) sq. units
= 2(80 × 2) m² = 2 × 160 m² = 320 m²
Area of intersection of the paths = (Side²) sq. units
= (2 × 2) m² = 4 m²
Actual area of the paths = (Area of the paths) - (Area of the intersection of the path)
= (320 - 4) m² = 316 m²
Hence, the area of the paths is 316 m².
