A mixture of ethyne and air is not used because it results in incomplete burning because of the limited supply of oxygen. Air is a mixture of many gases with oxygen accounting for only 21℅ of it, so the higher temperatures required for welding cannot be reached.
However, if a direct mixture of ethyne and oxygen is used, it burns completely producing the required temperature and thereby promotes welding efficiently.
