a1=3(1)-8=3-8=-5
a2=3(2)-8=6-8=-2
a3=3(3)-8=9-8=1
a4=3(4)-8=12-8=4
a5=3(5)-8=15-8=7
therefore, fifth term is 7
common difference =a2-a1=-2-(-5)=-2+5=3
