There are several factors leading to the decline and extinction of passenger pigeons (wild pigeons). Passenger pigeons were hunted for their meat. The commercialization of their meat as cheap food resulted in hunting on a massive scale for many decades. Another factor was the shrinking of breeding populations necessary for preservation of the species. Finally the widespread deforestation destroyed their habitat.
