B.
Circle the proper nouns and underline the common nouns in the
following passage.
In the Middle Ages in Europe, people mostly ate meat and fish. Spices were
used not only to add flavour to the food, but also helped in preserving it.
Food like meat and fish would get spoilt quickly. But spices did not grow in
Europe. They grew in the warm, tropical countries of the East. The East was
also famous for silk and jewels. The sea passage to the East had not been
discovered, so traders and merchants had to make a long and difficult journey
over land. Vast, arid deserts and tall mountains had to be crossed to reach
India and China.
Caravans took years to get from Europe to Asia and very few survived the
torturous heat and the numbing cold. There were also nomads who would
rob and kill the travellers in the caravans. By the thirteenth century, things
improved somewhat. Kublai Khan, the ruler of China, worked hard to improve
the conditions for travellers and traders. It was at this time that one of the
most famous travellers of all time, Marco Polo, took the route we call the Silk
Road to China.
