I own a AsRock G31M-VS2 motherboard with e7500 core2duo 2.93Ghz processor, 2x2GB RAM, creative sb 5.1 sound card. Now I have bought a Radeon hd 6870 graphics card which demands 500w power supply. So I was going to buy a 650w cooler master psu. Can my motherboard handle that much power? Or, if I choose a 500w psu from the same company, will it be enough to run my hd 6870?

any motherboard will support any powersupply (as long as it have the cables your computer need which almost all power supplies have)
the 500 watt is just a suggestion, they have to count in the rest of your computer + crappy brand
basicly your fine with a 350-400 watt good quality power supply, and rather have a high quality power supply then a bad one that says 1000 watt but mby will only give you 600 watts before it burns out
Agree with J s completely .. however when looking at PSUs look for bronze certified
and if you have the choice of one that says "continuous power" choose that one .. it means that it will run @ the Max wattage for extended periods .. where as a normal PSU if it gets to Max it will burn out
