Let's use body temperature as an example. If your body gets too hot, negative feedback kicks in to cool it down. Sweating is one way your body cools itself. As your body sweats, it releases moisture onto your skin. When this moisture evaporates, it takes away some of the heat with it, cooling down your body. This cooling process helps bring your body temperature back to its normal range.
Positive feedback, on the other hand, is like an "amplify" signal. It works to reinforce or magnify changes, pushing a system further away from its normal state. Let's consider childbirth as an example of positive feedback. When a woman is ready to give birth, positive feedback helps intensify contractions. As the baby's head pushes against the cervix, it stimulates the release of a hormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin then causes stronger contractions, which further pushes the baby's head against the cervix. This cycle continues until the baby is delivered.
To summarize, negative feedback keeps things in balance by opposing changes from the normal state, while positive feedback amplifies or reinforces changes, often moving a system away from the normal state.
