Meisois :
• It takes place in generative cells .
• Four daughter cells are produced by the division of parent cell.
• Number of chromosomes is reduced to half in daughter cells.
• Daughter cell are genetically different.
• Meiosis is reduction phase.
• Meiosis is sexual reproduction and haploid .
• Germ cell is present.
• Prophase is complicated
• There is exchange of genes or crossing over .
• Very important for organic evolution .
Significance of meiosis –
• Haploid gametes required for sexual reproduction can be produced by meiosis only. If there is no meiosis then the number of chromosome in zygote formed by fusion of two gametes would double every time.
• There is exchange of genetic material during crossing over in meiosis .It leads to the formation of four genetically different daughter cells. These daughter cells are different from their parent cell also .
• This genetic variation forms the basis of organic evolution.
