Each level in the food chain is called a trophic level. The different trophic levels are Primary producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, tertiary consumers and quaternary consumers. When dead organic matter becomes the starting of a food chain, then it is called the detritus food chain .

Producer : Plants are called as producer .They form the first level of any food chain.Producers can make their own food by the process called photosynthesis.
Consumers: Consumers are classified into primary consumer,secondary consumers, tertiary consumers .
Primary consumers: Animals which feed on plants are called primary consumer. For examle - grasshopperfeeds on grass.
Secondary consumers : Animals which feeds on primary consumers are called secondary consumers. For example - frog feeds on grasshopper .
Tertiary consumers : Animals which feeds on secondary consumers are called tertiary consumers. For example- snake feeds on frog .
