to understand this we have to see how the elements were arranged in the ancient times( not stone age :) ) , earlier they were arranged on the basis of their increasing atomic weight but when they plotted the graph wrt to increasing atomic weight they were not able to get a straight line..( here straight line will mark the regularity or the trends) , but when they had taken atomic number as the basis of arrangement or classification , they obtained a straight line graph which represent the regularity in trends..
now , lets try to figure out why similar trends ,
the main reason for this similar trends is the valence electron present , when u see Li , Na or Mg, Ca.. they have same no of valence electron and therefore able to express same type of chemical behavior..
