Sugar produced by photosynthesis is either stored (starch) or released to the soluble pool where it becomes available for growth, respiration, or transport to the root. Pi is transported from the soil to the soluble pool of the root compartment and transferred to the shoot. A fraction of the Pi is transported back to the root compartment together with sugar flux in the phloem.
