1. Tall enough
2. Pretty enough
3. Skinny enoguh
4. Have good skin
Yes. This sounds harsh- because it is. The modelling industry is harsh, and your body, your appearance is your money maker. Like applying to be a doctor or lawyer, they look at your grades. Modelling- they look at your face and body. If it's not up to par then you're out.
But you are asking how to get into the industry so that is implying you have come to terms with or are aware of the harsh appearance criteria.
1. First get your headshots. I cannot stress enough how important this is. Find a photographer and get your pictures taken. (Tip: Have no makeup in your headshots, modelling scouts find it very annoying when models cake on the makeup because it doesn't show your true face & what they are working with)
2. If an agency doesn't find you, find local modelling agencies in your area. Once found, be prepared to wait a while before being seen. Show them the headshots and cross your fingers that they accept you in their agency.
3. Once you've got your agency, make connections , you're going to need to meet with other models & use their relationships with brands to introduce yourself and put your foot in the door.
4. Keep working. Work hard. Modelling isn't easy, this is a huge misconception, to get to lounging in 5 Star hotels and shopping in Beverly you ;will need to work hard. School becomes secondary, focus primarily on modelling. Expect to be travelling a lot so you will have to be comfortable with that. Do this for 3+ years relentlessly - work hard.
5. Remember that you're beautiful. Just because a brand doesn't like your face or body, don't feel compelled to change it. Move on, find another brand. Plenty of models have been turned down because they didn't look the “part” even though they were clearly beautiful . Different brands want different looks. Learnt that.
