Peddler used the metaphor rattrap for the world because as the rattrap is a small cage in which the bait or temptation is kept and the rat get tempted to go towards it and as a result gets caught in it. Similarly, in this world there are too many temptations for one to get caught such as riches and joys, shelter and food, heat and clothing, exactly like the bait given in the rat trap. As and when one gets tempted to touch the bait, it closes on him and everything comes to an end just like the rat trapped in the trap.
