static electricity is formed when there's imbalance in between positive and negative charges of a certain object
when two materials are in contact, electrons may move from one material to another, which leaves an excess charge on one material and equal negative charge on other. This leads to formation of static electricity
Static electricity has been known as far back as the ancient Greeks that things could be given a static electric "charge" (a buildup of static) simply by rubbing them, but they had no idea that the same energy could be used to generate light or power machines.
