Valency of a compound can be found by 2 simple steps:
1- You have to remember the valency of various elements
2- calculate the overall valency, based on the number of +ve and -ve valency of elements of a compound.
ex- You have to find the valency of S04
S in ground state has e- conf. of 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4 3d0
The same e- conf. in excited state becomes 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1 3p3 3d2
AS THERE ARE 4 Oxygen, their overall e- is 8. Out of 8 electrons, 6 gets filled with sulphur to make e- conf 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d4. 2 electrons are still remaining unpaired. Hence the charge of SO4 is 2-.
