- A blank or flickering dialog box
-- A frozen cursor or screen
-- An error such as one of the following:
"This program has performed an illegal operation."
"Invalid Page Fault in Pm70.exe."
"Kernel32.dll."
"Illegal instruction."
"Segment load failure."
Different factors can cause system errors, including conflicts among device drivers, software, and hardware, and corrupt elements in specific files. Although a system error may occur only when you work with PageMaker, PageMaker may not necessarily be the cause--it may be the only application that is memory- or processor-intensive enough to expose the problem.

Beginning troubleshooting
The tasks in this section can help you resolve the most common system errors. Before performing any of these tasks, back up all personal files (for example, PageMaker publications, PPD files). Always restart the computer after a system error occurs to refresh its memory. Continuing to work without restarting the computer may compound the problem.
Note: Some of the solutions in this document require you to look for files with specific filename extensions (for example, Pm70.cnf). By default, Windows Explorer hides filename extensions it recognizes.
To show hidden files, hidden folders and all filename extensions in Windows Explorer:
1. Choose Tools > Folder Options (Windows 2000 or Me) or View > Options (Windows NT) or View > Folder Options (Windows 98).
2. Click the View tab.
3. Select Show All Files (Windows NT) or double-click Show Hidden Files And Folders and select Show All Files in the Hidden Files folder (Windows 2000, Me, or 98).
4. Deselect Hide File Extensions For Known File Types.
5. Click OK.
1. Make sure that the system meets the minimum requirements for PageMaker 7.x.
PageMaker may not run correctly if the system doesn't meet the following requirements:
-- Intel Pentium processor
-- Microsoft Windows XP, 2000, Me, 98, or NT 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or 6
-- 32 MB of available RAM (48 MB or more recommended)
-- 175 MB of available hard disk space (200 MB or more recommended)
-- Video card with 800 x 600 resolution and 8-bit/256 colors (24-bit, high-resolution display recommended)
-- CD-ROM drive
-- For Adobe PostScript printers: Adobe PostScript Level 2 or later
Note: To check how much RAM is installed on the computer, choose Start > Settings > Control Panel, and double-click System. The amount of RAM is listed on the lower half of the General panel in the System Properties window.
2. Re-create the PageMaker preferences file.
You can re-create the PageMaker preferences file to eliminate problems caused by a damaged preferences file.
Note: After you re-create the preferences file, you need to respecify any custom settings.
To re-create the preferences files:
1. Exit from PageMaker.
2. Open the Program Files/Adobe/PageMaker 7.0/Rsrc/Usenglsh folder.
3. Rename thefollowing files (for example, to Pm70old.cnf):
-- Pm70.cnf
-- Pm70filt.cnf
-- Pm70ppd.cnf
-- PStyles.cnf files
4. Start PageMaker. PageMaker creates a new preferences files.
If the problem continues, the preferences files is not the cause. To restore custom settings, delete the new preferences files and restore the original names of the previous preferences files.
3. Run PageMaker while no applications are running in the background.
Some applications that run in the background may cause system errors or freezes when running concurrently with PageMaker. You can identify these applications and disable them before starting PageMaker. To identify problematic applications that run in the background, remove applications from the Startup folder and close those that are specified in the registry to start automatically.
To identify a problematic application in the Startup folder:
1. Exit from open applications.
2. In Windows Explorer, move all icons and shortcuts from the Startup folders to another folder:
