Atopic dermatitis is related to food allergy. Don't give your child cow's milk. Instead he may be given goat's milk. Similarly he may have allergy to wheat, preservatives, food colors, chocolates, peanut, etc. Please avoid allergic foods.
Please note the details of food given to him and the child's allergic reaction to such foods. But trial and error, you can know which foods are causing allergy.
Local steroid creams are the main treatment for the itching in eczema. Use the steroid cream as prescribed by the doctor. After the rash settles down, use it at least once daily for another 2 weeks. It can be used whenever the itching or rash develops.
Good hydration of the skin followed by a lubricating cream is the main way to prevent flare-ups of eczema. Water-soaked skin is much less itchy. The eczematous skin is very sensitive to soaps, therefore avoid soaps as much as possible, especially during flare-ups. Alternatively, use a mild, moisturizing soap.
The skin is generally dry in eczema. After a good bath, the skin feels good due to hydration. The moisture in the skin can be retained by applying a layer of lubricating cream to the entire skin while it is damp. Apply it daily after the steroid cream has been applied to the itchy areas. Avoid applying any ointments or petroleum jelly because they block the sweat glands, increase the itching, and worsen the rash, especially in warm weather. Also, soap is needed to wash them off, which can aggravate the problem.
Keep the fingernails cut short as the scratching with nails will perpetuate the vicious cycle of itching. Frequent hand washing will avoid any super-infection of the eczema.
Oh my goodness...you would love the products that I use on my 2 year old son for her eczema! It's a wash and oil. The eczema spots disappear in 24 hours after the oil is applied to the breakout area. When you use the product consistently, most times you can avoid breakouts all together! I can send you the website to view before/after photos. There is also great information on the product there too. I would be happy to send off some samples if you would like to try the products. Good luck!
Gosh, would she feel better about the over-the-counter hydrocortisone 1%? That's what we use for our son. The cheapest place to get it is, of course, Costco. Also, since we started giving our son daily oatmeal baths, his eczema has declined markedly--no kidding. It's as easy as it sounds. Buy a cheap store brand of oatmeal (just oatmeal, with no apples, brown sugar, or anything else in it). Put 1/4 to 1/2 cup in the tub with the bath. Don't do a special rinse after his bath. Whatever is in the oatmeal should stay on his skin. PS Don't let him drink the water or eat the oatmeal when he's in the bath, of course. : )
