The proteins and iron in them are what give the cells -- and your blood -- their red color. Because red blood cells only live about 4 months, your body constantly makes new ones, which are known as reticulocytes. They're made by bone marrow, a spongy tissue inside many of your bones.

Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells (RBCs). In the process of erythropoiesis (red blood cell formation), reticulocytes develop and mature in the bone marrow and then circulate for about a day in the blood stream before developing into mature red blood cells.
