The major causes of deforestation are:
1. Natural causes such as hurricanes, fires, parasites and floods.
2. Human activities such as agriculturural expansion, cattle breeding, timber extraction mining, oil extraction, dam construction and infrastructure development.

- Some of the indirect causes are insufficient political actions and governance failure as inadequate land tenure system, corruption, wrong public administrative investments.
- Political and socio- economic causes such as population growth, military conflicts and climatic changes.
