Answer:
The first Governor-General of India was Lord William Bentinck. He was appointed in 1833, after the Charter Act of 1833 was passed. This act unified the administration of British India under a single Governor-General. Prior to this, there were three Presidencies (Bengal, Madras, and Bombay), each with its own Governor.
Bentinck served as Governor-General until 1835. During his tenure, he implemented a number of important reforms, including:
The abolition of sati (the practice of widow burning) The introduction of English as the language of administration and education The suppression of thuggee (a form of organized robbery and murder)
Bentinck was a controversial figure, but he is generally regarded as one of the most important Governors-General of India. His reforms helped to modernize India and lay the groundwork for the future development of the country.
