Explanation:
The administration of the British rule in India was different than that of former rulers in the following way:-
1.) Emphasis on Maps, Surveys:- British had put great emphasis on mapping the regions under its control for better administration. This emphasis on geography was not much from the former Indian rulers. Also, British did conduct extensive surveys like Census, on flora and fauna, soil, cropping etc to rule India effectively.
2) Emphasis on written records:- English administration laid emphasis on written administration records for issuing orders. This was effective as they can be questioned later and it will be free from ambiguities. The record rooms, archives and museums of today store these and serve as an example. This tradition of maintaining official record was not much in medieval India.
Inspite of these new administrative reforms, British could rule India because of lack of unity among it’s rulers after the breakdown of mighty Mughal empire. EIC rule started in this way
1.) EIC could bribe Mughal rulers of Bengal to obtain Zamindari rights of three villages in Bengal. This shows the greed for money of the then Mughal rulers.
2.) Robert Clive could successfully bribe Mir Jafar by promising him the throne of nawab after defeating Sirajuddaulah in Battle of Plassey. This shows the greed for throne and lack of integrity in the then rulers.
3.) British saw the lack of unity between various Indian Kingdoms and thus implemented the Divide and Rule Policy to rule the entire India. It supported Marathas and Nawabs in their fight against Tipu Sultan, and later defeated Marathas in Anglo Maratha Wars.
