We all are known to the fact that all the elements gain or loose electrons so that they can attain the electronic configuration of the nearest noble gas, i.e. they can be stable by having 8 electrons n their outermost orbit.
Due to the same reason, the elements after gaining or loosing electrons( after forming ions ) can be classified as follows:
1. Cations - When an ion looses electrons to attain stable electronic configuration then it is termed as a cation. During electrolysis, they are attracted to cathode. They are positively charged. They are generally metals.
2. Anions - When an ion gains electrons to attain stable electronic configuration then it is called an anion. During electrolysis, they are attracted to anode. They are negatively charge. They are generally non-metals.
