Obelisks were tall, four-sided carved pillars built by Egyptian Kings about 5000 years ago. It is believed that the shadow cast by these obelisks helped people know the time during the day.
These were mostly built in pairs.
The word obelisk is derived from Egyptian word "obeliskos", which basically means a needle.

Obelisks are a stone rectangular pillar, set on a base. Obelisks reach heights of over 100 feet. Egyptians created in the form on some pt. in Early Dynastic Period (c. 3150- 2613 BCE). Obelisks are originally called tekhenu by their builders.
