There's a British TV show from the 70's called 'I, Claudius' which is very similar to Rome. You should be able to find it online, try www.alluc.org. Or get the DVDs from amazon, It's actually a pretty good show. Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Claudius_%28TV_ser...
I agree with Shannon. Remember, before cable, network TV depended on advertising. As a kid we watched westerns all the time because they were cheap and easy to shoot outside of Los Angeles. Shows like Spartacus and Cleopatra cost a mint so there were never any TV shows about the gladiators that I remember. I just saw Rome a couple of weeks ago and it was really good - but not as good as "Gladiator" or "Spartacus"
