Orbitals that have the same value of the principal quantum number form a shell. Orbitals within a shell are divided into subshells that have the same value of the angular quantum number .
The maximum number of electrons present in a shell is given by the formula 2n sq ,where 'n' is the orbit number. Hence the maximum number of electrons in different shells are as follows: the first orbit will be equal to 2x1sq =2, second orbit will be =2x2 sq =8, third orbit will be 2x3sq =18, fourth orbit will be =2x4sq =32 and so on.
