Solenoid vs coil
There is no particular difference between a coil and a solenoid. A solenoid is a long coil containing a large number of close turns of insulated copper wire. It may be regarded as a circular coil with very large number of turns. So, we can consider a solenoid up of elementary circular coils.
The difference is in their lengths. Solenoid has a longer length compared to its diameter. Also, the distance between its two loops is longer. While a coil has a bigger diameter and the distance between two loops in a coil is shorter compared to its diameter. Thus, we can say that a solenoid looks like a spring at its original or slightly elongated length and a coil as the same compressed spring.
Solenoid vs a straight conductor
For the same current flowing through a solenoid and a straight conductor,the magnetic field produced by a solenoid is much Stronger than the magnetic field produced by a straight current carrying conductor. This is due to the fact that the magnetic field strength of a solenoid is more inside the solenoid , but in the case of a straight conductor it is more at the poles .
More amount of magnetic field lines pass through a solenoid than a straight conductor.
