To follow the logic put down by Sean Kernan I have addressed his list and they are not mutually exclusive within the right context.
“Don’t have kids too young.”
To me, this means don’t have kids before you are 25–30. Your chance of success in life goes up exponentially the longer you wait to have kids.
“Don’t wait to have kids when you are older.”
To me, this means don’t have kids after 40. Your chance of having a low-risk pregnancy is zero. By definition, the risks are higher.
“Don’t waste your young years at the office.”
To me, this means don’t get locked into one of those jobs early on that wants you to work 60 hours a week for little pay and even less opportunity. Enjoy your weekends, travel, have fun and enjoy being young, active and social.
“Focus on your career.”
To me, this means, don’t just have 2–3 part-time jobs that don’t relate to an actual career path. Focus on the time you spend building towards your career goals.
“Save your money.”
To me, this means, put some money aside. If you start at age 21 and you put aside just $500 per month, then after 40 years of it well invested, you will have $1.2M-$1.8M in cash in your investment fund. That is enough to retire on if you do everything else right. Pay yourself first and put that $500 away every month.
“Do lots of traveling/Live/explore”
To me, this means, If you live on half of what you make and save the $500 as above, then the rest of your money can be used for life experiences. Travel, Live and Explore the world. If possible, find a way for it to be career related.
