metals ...lose electrons....gain +ve charge
non-metals ...gain electrons...gain -ve charge
hope uh find it helpful
When an atom gains one or more electrons the number of electrons becomes less than the number of protons. These are the positive ions called cation.
When an atom gains one or more electrons the number of electrons becomes more than the number of protons. These are the negative ions called anion.
The charge on the ion is corresponding to the number of electrons lost or gained. The ion may be monovalent, bivalent, trivalent and tetravalent which corresponds to the valencies of 1,2,3 and 4 respectively. When cation or anion is formed, only there is a change in the number of electrons not in the number of protons and the mass number.
Hope you understand!
