In biology, cache is a term that is used to describe the animal tendencies of "hoarding". In this behaviour, the animal hides food in different locations for later consumption. It is done mainly as a measure to store surplus food for later (for example during harsh weather conditions), or can also be done to ripen fruits. Caching is mainly practiced by birds like woodpeckers, and rodents like rats and squirrels.
Since animals (of the same species or of different species) may steal the cached food, animals have to be careful of where they hide their cache. Scatter-hoarding is done by many animals like squirrels and chipmunks, where they hide small quantities of food all over their home range in many different places. This discourages other animals from stealing or pilfering (since the quantities of food cached in one place are very small), but the cacher then has the problem of remembering so many different locations in order to retrieve their food. But since often, the cacher forgets some places where it has hidden the food (including seeds and nuts), this method of caching acts as an important form of seed-dispersal as well.
Another way of caching includes storing all the food in a central location, where the animal usually nests or lives. This method doesn't require too much of memory power, but it requires fierce defending since the larger hoard is much more likely to be pilfered. Common animals in which practice this of large hoarding include hamsters.
