The morphological changes that occur during homolog pairing of non-sister chromatids are the basis for dividing meiotic prophase into five sequential stages—leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, and diakinesis.
At the diplotene stage, one can see the individual cross-over events between non-sister chromatids because the synaptonemal complex gets disassembled. This process is followed by the process of segregation, and this is demarcated as the stage of ‘DIAKINESIS’.
