It is one of the key parts of a grass plant to be able to identify its species and name. A ligule can be long or short, shredded or rounded, sharp or dull. Some species have hairy projections as ligules.
Ligules aren’t always found on a grass plant; in some species they’re absent, with only a ridge at the base to show where a ligule could be. Most fescue species have this characteristic.

it's features include the presence of agranal plastids with well developed internal tubule systems, and complex lomasomes. Many Golgi vesicles are produced, and accumulate in the groundplasm. Some of these pass into cell vacuoles (where breakdown occurs), others fuse with the plasmalemma (where discharge of contents to the outside may take place).
