The quantum state of any electron can be readily described by a set of four quantum numbers. The first quantum number is known as the principal quantum number and it designates the energy level of the electron. The second quantum number is usually referred to as the azimuthal quantum number and it designates the shape and size of the electron orbital. The third quantum number is known as the magnetic quantum number and it describes the orientation of the orbital in the three-dimensional space. The final quantum number is known as the spin quantum number and it designates the type of spin the electron has (either positive one-half or negative one-half).
