Obesity is a condition where a person has excessive body fat that can negatively affect their health. It's when someone is significantly overweight due to factors like unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, or genetic predisposition. It's important to maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent obesity.

Obesity may be defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese.
It's caused when extra calories are stored in the body as fat. If you consume high amounts of energy, particularly found in high fat and high sugar foods, and do not use all of the energy through physical activity, much of the extra energy will be stored in the body as fat.
Obesity is frequently subdivided into categories:
Class 1: BMI of 30 to < 35.
Class 2: BMI of 35 to < 40.
Class 3: BMI of 40 or higher.
Carrying extra fat leads to serious health consequences such as cardiovascular disease (mainly heart disease and stroke), type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders like osteoarthritis, and some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon). These conditions cause premature death and substantial disability.
