SONAR stands for Sound Navigation And Ranging. It is used to detect objects under the water surface and measure the depth of oceans. It sends ultrasonic waves at a certain speed under the water surface, and hears an echo. It measures the time interval and uses the formula 2d = st, where d is distance, s is speed and t is time. This means distance between the water surface and sea bed = st/2.
