zip files are handled by more operating systems and applications than rar files. How much they compress depends on what they are compressing. A dot txt file might decrease in size by 50%, a dot exe file might actually increase in size a little bit. However, that's only one reason to use these files. The other reason to use both is as an archive - that is, you can send a set of files in one operation so they all arrive somewhere else as a set. The other reason to use rar is that a rar archive can split into small chunks for easy uploading/downloading. When all the files of a rar are downloaded, the files in the archive can be extracted.
Winzip and Winrar are compressing utilities which help us to compress our data using different algorithms. Both offer good compression, but Winzip does not have the RAR feature which Winrar has. I like winrar personally because its fast and does not nag like Winzip.
WinRAR provides the full RAR and ZIP file support, can decompress CAB, GZIP, ACE and other archive formats.
Windows data compression utility that focuses on the Zip data compression format for all Windows users. Built-in support for popular Internet file formats.

they are both file compressors and work really well. I have used both in the past but now stick with with winrar as it seems to have better functions and stability and although they both have alerts to purchase after the trial period they continue working.
It depends on the type of file you are compressing how much it can actually compress it but it is very handy for zipping and mailing .exe files that some email clients block.
Already lots of good answers above.
You should know that there are many other similar tools available. I for one prefer BitZipper, which is both WinRAR and WinZip compatible. The main thing I like about it is the Batch tool, which will let you select a whole list of files to decompress at once. Makes it super easy to extract all your downloads by the click of a button.
The difference is the compression algorithm used.
Yes, you can use both to compress anything..
Depending on what your are trying to compress. A plain ASCII file will compress about 90%. A JPG will compress very little (jpg is already a compressed format).
been asked be4 ...
"The biggest difference is with their primary compression type.
RAR has a lot of options and from my experience generally gives better compression.
ZIP is more of a standard, however, ZIP compression and decompression comes standard with many operating systems (like Windows) these days.
With WinRAR, you get both.
The second biggest difference, is that updates to WinRAR are free."
For an interesting discussion or RAR vs. ZIP, see the following forum thread:

they'll both unpack both rar and zip files but i prefer winrar
