The pleural membrane has two layers:
Parietal layerVisceral layer
Parietal layer is usually attached to the ribs and interests spaces.
Visceral layer covers the lungs. Visceral layer also secretes lung surfactant to some extent which helps in,
reducing the tension in the lungs .Helps alveoli in exchange of gases .Prevents collapse of alveoli.
Type 2 cells are the other cells that secrete lung surfactant.
Absence of lung surfactant causes respiratory distress syndrome.
Between the two pleural layers is the pleural fluid which helps in preventing friction between the two pleural layers. It also helps in maintaining the pressure inside the thorax.
