Himalayas are called young fold mountains because they began forming in the late Cretaceous - Tertiary period and continue to increase in elevation even today. They are called fold mountains due to the compressive forces involved in the collision of the two continental plates - the Asian and the Indian / Australian.
Features:
(i) It is the northern most and continuous range.
(ii) It consists of lofty peaks like Nanda Devi and Kanchenjunga.
(iii) It is snow-bound and consists of glaciers.
(iv) It is symmetrical in nature and is composed of granite.
