Nepal's previous constitution did not proclaimed the country as a republic, rather it was a constitutional monarchy, and still many powers of the government were held by the King, though he was stripped of all important position. After the accession of King Gyanendra tried to reclaim the powers the royalty had lost and sacked the Nepalese parliament. This was followed by a mass protest by the people of Nepal, which was also mobilized by the political parties in Nepal which ultimately led to the sacking of the royalty, and the commencement of a new, secular republic by the introduction of a new constitution in 2006.
