Iron is a corrosive metal when it is exposed to air it reacts with the water that is moisture present in air as well as oxygen present in air because of which a red colour powder like layer comes over the iron and that is rust a complete rusted iron is harmful to touch it can be poisonous.
To avoid corrosion we apply oil, grease, etc which help iron to not get exposed to layer , they prevent iron from oxygen and moisture present in air. For example the cycle chain is oiled in every 2 to 3 months to prevent from rust and work smoothly, the hinges of doors are oiled during winter season. etc etc
