What are the pros/cons of laptops vs netbooks/ultrabooks vs tablets? Which scenarios are they best for?
I have a desktop so I already have a computer for all my power intense tasks.

As said by Jeremy, when having lectures you would need something in the way of an ultrabook/laptop/netbook. I would say not the netbook, could be too small form factor for some.
The problem with these is performance outside of word processing. Gaming, video editing etc. would not be viable, unless you want to fork out above $1000 for one.
I would personally get a Chromebook for word processing and have a $500 gaming PC built by myself.
College: Laptop/Netbook/Ultrabook
If you actually go to class...It's a lot easier downloading the Class's slide, and writing annotations as the teacher talks.
If you're a gamer, stick with your desktop but with a tablet.
Honestly, depending on the tablet you get, it's about the same price as an average laptop.
But if you're a gamer..a legit gamer who will get distracted instead of doing your homework and skipping classes to play League (yea, I know these kids), I'd recommend leave your desktop at home. And get a laptop/tablet.
