the acid is hydrochloric acid (HCl). when the body produces too much of this acid it causes pain and irritation. hence antacid such as milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) is taken to neutralise the excess acid in the stomach
Hydrochloric acid is released in stomach which helps with digestion of proteins . Excess production of Hcl can cause stomach ulcers which may be painful . Bases aren't used as such as they make stomach alkaline thereby triggering more acid release .Rather histamine blockers are used to help with hyperacidity.
