carbon dioxide is called dry ice because it has the gaseous power by which it can form the ice which is containing methane and carbon dioxide

Solid carbon dioxide is called dry ice because it resembles ice, but does not melt. If you freeze water and warm it up it changes from a solid to a liquid (it melts). However, if you take frozen, solid Carbon Dioxide and warm it it will not melt, it will turn directly into a gas. Thus as no liquid forms as it is heated it is called dry ice.
