Treaty of Amritsar in 1809 with Ranjit Singh of the Punjab recognized the Sutlej River as the boundary between the Sikh state in the Punjab and the British Indian territories.
The Sutlej River was used as the line to when Ranjit took control over the frontier of lands.
It was not considered as the defensive treaty suggests by the British for the control over Punjab and against French.
Ranjit goal was to bring out the states of Cis-Sutlej underneath his control rather than British or Napoleon.
