Matilda was not satisfied with what her life had to offer and was ashamed of her status. As she was humiliated by her lower-middle-class existence, she, generally, avoided meeting her rich friends like Mme Forestier, a wealthy lady, whom she knew from her days at the convent school.
Also , She needs some attractive jewellery and accessories and clothes to wear at the party . her loving husband gave her all his savings of four hundred francs to buy a beautiful dress. He had saved that amount for buying a rifle for himself, but gave the money to his wife to buy her dress.
