Different water harvesting systems like dams built of stone and rubble, reservoirs or lakes, embankments and canals were adopted in ancient india for irrigation purpose and we have continued this tradition in modern india by building dams in most of our river basins
Some of these structures were:
1. During the time of Chandragupta Maurya, dams, lakes and irrigation were extensively built
2. In the 11th century, Bhopal lake , one of the largest artificial lakes of it's time was built
