The only thing they can do is move about from one location to another. They collide with each other and change direction and velocity. But there is no change in energy because collisions are perfectly elastic. Therefore the only type of energy they have is kinetic energy. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of these particles. When temperature increases, the average kinetic energy increases (the particles move faster). When temperature decreases, they move slower.
