This promotes the fusion of heavier and heavier elements, ultimately forming all the elements up to iron.

Ninety percent of all atoms in the universe are hydrogen atoms and fusion reactions fuel stars, resulting in the formation of helium and higher atomic number elements. This is the case because of the Big Bang, when temperatures were so high that only energy could exist.
Helium is the second-most abundant element in the universe, after hydrogen, and accounts for about 25 percent of the atoms in the universe. Most of the helium in the universe was created in the Big Bang, but it also is the product of hydrogen fusion in stars
