It is because there is a invisible magnet which points it's North Pole towards geographical South and it's South Pole points towards geographic north. So the magnetic compass points its north pole towards geographic north and south pole towards geographic South.

Draw Earth as a large magnet. Now draw a big magnet inside it. Draw another magnetic compass inside it. Now erase the large magnet. You can see the North Pole of magnetic compass is pointing towards geographic north and south pole towards geographic South.
